From Mouthpiece to Melody: A Beginner Band Story

LCS Grade 6 students shared their first band concert experience on Thursday, January 30, 2025. Our Beginner Band Presentation is designed to give parents, friends and our own Grade 4 and 5 students a glimpse into the process of what it is like to be in Grade 6 Band.

From exploring how to make a sound on a mouthpiece, to learning how to sit, hold their instrument, and breathe properly, the 30 minute presentation took guests on a journey – walking them through what Grade 6 Band sounded like on Day 1 to where they are now! It was fantastic to see the amazing growth that has happened in just a few short months. Guests heard first sounds on instruments and the progression to learning the first five notes. Discovering vibration, melody, reading music on a page, adding in harmony, and putting four parts together were explained and demonstrated by our Grade 6 students. The concert concluded with a performance of “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” in preparation for the Level One Band Festival.

Congratulations to all of our brave students who stepped out of their comfort zone to play a solo or perform in a small group. Thanks to our student speakers who helped narrate each step of the process and to Middle Years band teacher Mrs. Marla Friesen for her teaching and encouragement of our youngest band students.
