Design and Buoyancy in Early Years Science

Grade 2 students at LCS learned about buoyancy during their Science unit on Properties of Solids, Liquids and Gases. They designed and built a boat out of materials that were gathered at home and later constructed at school. Prior science knowledge, and creativity was required to complete the project that was assessed on materials used, buoyancy, cargo space and creative and interesting design.

Students were eager to build their boats and used wood, milk and juice cartons, straws, cloth, styrofoam, cork, toothpicks, popsicle sticks, tinfoil and more.

On October 28, students in Mrs. Karla Banman’s class had the opportunity to test their boat in water to see if it would float and hold a load. It was great to see students cheering each other on during the testing process and celebrating the learning that took place throughout this science unit.
