First Notes at Grade 6 Beginner Band Presentation

On Thursday, January 29, 2026, our Grade 6 students reached a significant milestone in their musical journey at the LCS Beginner Band Presentation.

This annual presentation is more than just a concert; it is an “open door” into the classroom, designed to give parents, friends, and our Grade 4 and 5 students a front-row seat to the process of learning an instrument.

The 30-minute presentation took guests on a chronological journey, starting right at the beginning. Students demonstrated the foundational steps that often go unseen:

  • The Basics: The discipline of proper posture, breathing techniques, and the initial challenge of producing a sound using only a mouthpiece.
  • The Progression: Moving from “first sounds” to mastering their first five notes.
  • The Mechanics: Understanding vibration, reading music on a page, and the magic of turning a simple melody into a multi-part harmony.

It was truly inspiring to see the immense growth that has taken place in just a few short months. What began as a room full of separate sounds has quickly transformed into a cohesive ensemble capable of playing in four-part harmony.

A highlight of the morning was the bravery shown by our students who stepped out of their comfort zones. Students who performed solos and played in small ensembles demonstrated the “courage to try”—a value we celebrate at LCS.

We also want to extend a special “well done” to our student speakers, who did a fantastic job narrating each step of the presentation with clarity and confidence.

We are deeply grateful to Mrs. Marla Friesen, our Middle Years Band instructor. Her patience, expertise, and constant encouragement have provided our youngest band members with a firm foundation and a love for making music.

Congratulations, Grade 6! We cannot wait to hear how your talents continue to flourish as you “make a joyful noise” in the years to come.

All Grade 6 students at LCS learn an instrument and have the opportunity to learn about teamwork and harmony

Thank you to our speakers at the presentation
