Next Stop: Nationals! LCS Student Takes Award-Winning Innovation to EdmontonGrade 9 student Ayomipo O. recently attended the Manitoba Schools Science Symposium (MSSS), where is project, “Silent Speech Decoding for Dysarthria Using sEMG,” didn’t just win a Gold medal—it swept the intermediate category, winning the Misericordia Foundation Science Award of Excellence, the SHAD Award, first place for the Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Award and Most Outstanding Health and Biotechnology Award.
Ayomipo built a silent speech recognition device that uses surface electromyography (sEMG) sensors and machine learning that has the ability to detect what someone is trying to say from facial muscle signals. The goal of his project was to create a faster, hands-free way for people with Dysarthria and speech disorders to communicate in real time.
Ayomipo was selected as the overall Provincial winner of the MSSS and will be representing Manitoba at the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Edmonton from May 23-30, 2026. LCS is excited to be sending a student representative to this prestigious national event, where groundbreaking research and inventive solutions offer a window into the amazing potential of our nation’s young scientists.
