Researching Manitoba Animals in Grade 1

Grade 1 students in Miss Jennifer Rumbolt’s class recently learned about the needs of living things. Each student chose a Manitoba animal to study and investigated their physical attributes, diet, how they move, and where they live. After studying text features in non fiction books, simple research notes were converted into full sentences that students crafted into a book about their Manitoba animal. The fun project developed comprehension, organization, and writing skills.

On October 28, 2024 the classroom was buzzing with excitement as the Grade 1s built dioramas of their animals’ habitats using shoeboxes, paint, natural elements (leaves, twigs), cotton, and plasticine. Deer, caribou, snakes, fox, owls, grasshoppers, wolves and turtles and more were highlighted during this fun project that incorporated science, ELA, and the visual arts.
