Student Musicians Shine at Jazz Café 2026There is a certain magic that happens when the lights go down, the aroma of fresh coffee fills the air, and the first soulful notes of a saxophone drift across a crowded room. On January 14, 2026, our school community was treated to that exact experience, as we hosted our annual Jazz Cafe—a highlight at LCS each winter, that once again proved that our Performing Arts program equips our students with strong musical skills and performance opportunities.
With the Small Gym dimly lit and tables set for guests, the stage was set for our students to truly shine. The relaxed environment created a space where musicians felt the freedom to take risks, improvise, and share their progress with a supportive audience.
Between sets, our Grade 11 and 12 students moved through the room, serving coffee and dessert to our guests. This element of service added a layer of hospitality that made the evening feel less like a formal concert and more like a warm gathering of family and friends.
Across two sold-out shows, all of our Vocal Jazz and Jazz Band ensembles—spanning Grades 7 through 12—took to the stage. It was a joy to witness the musical progression of our students, from the emerging skills of our junior ensembles to the polished, sophisticated arrangements of our senior performers.
The evening included numerous individual solos, showcasing the courage and technical growth of our young musicians. Whether it was a vocal improvisation or a brass solo, the audience of parents, grandparents, and guests met the performances with enthusiastic applause. The feedback was unanimous: our guests loved the chance to see the students’ personalities shine through their music in a personal setting.
Thank you to our Performing Arts team: Mrs. Kim Neufeld, Mrs. Bobbie Fast, Mrs. Janna Reid and Mrs. Marla Friesen for guiding our young musicians and creating such a memorable evening. Thanks also to our hard working parent volunteers.
