Entrepreneurial Scholarship and Excellence Gala for LCS Student

Congratulations to current Grade 12 LCS student Irekoyinsola (Koyin) A. She applied for a Horatio Alger Undergraduate Scholarship when she was in Grade 11 and was recently awarded $5,000 towards a Canadian university of her choice. She travelled to Toronto and was celebrated, along with 29 other high school students, at an Excellence Gala / dinner reception at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre on October 17, 2023.

Horatio Alger Undergraduate Scholarships are awarded to 160 eligible students across all provinces and territories in Canada and are funded through the generosity of the Members of the Horatio Alger Association of Canada. This scholarship is annually open to grade 11 students who are enrolled in full time in high school, exhibit a strong commitment to pursue and complete a bachelor’s degree program at an accredited university, demonstrate a desire and ability to be entrepreneurial in a chosen field, are involved in community service, display integrity in overcoming adversity, and can prove financial need.

In addition to the scholarship, Koyin was awarded an all expense paid trip to Toronto, where she attended the Horatio Alger Excellence Gala, spent time hearing from Horatio Alger and scholarship recipient alumni, and attended workshops. The Gala hosted 700 guests and raised 6 million dollars. The evening celebrated the exceptional lives of six new Horatio Alger Association of Canada Award recipients/members: Amar S. Doman (Founder and Sole Shareholder of the The Futura Corporation), Peter Gilgan (Chairman and CEO of Mattamy Asset Management Inc.), Monique F. Lefroux (Retired Corporate Director, Chair of the Board and CEO of Desjardins Group), Anthony Von Mandl (Founder and CEO of the Mark Anthony Group of Companies, Ryan Reynolds (Actor, Producer and Entrepreneur), and Jim Treliving (Chairman of Boston Pizza International).

Koyin had the opportunity to meet Canadian businessman and TV personality Jim Treliving and academic/author and statesman David Johnston. Performers for the Gala included Pea Toscano (singer), David Foster (Canadian musician, composer, record producer and music executive), Caroline Campell (violinist) and Ed Robertson (Barenaked Ladies). The trip was a highlight and blessing in Koyin’s life. She was excited to have exposure to the many influential guests at the recent Excellence Gala in Toronto.

Koyin plans on attending the University of Manitoba in the fall of 2024. We are excited to see how God will direct and use her entrepreneurial spirit as she begins her post secondary education.
