Student Vote Canada on Election Day

Our Grade 9 Social Studies students hosted a civic election today for our Senior Years and Grade 4 students. Room 144 was designated as a polling station and each student had the opportunity to cast their vote for Mayor, City Councillors and School Trustees.

Student Vote Canada is a unique program that provides students with the opportunity to experience the voting process first hand and practice the habits of active and informed citizenship.

Senior Years teacher Mr. Smoker recently guided his Grade 9’s through a unit on government and policies. It was timely, as his students were able to cast their ballot on the same day as the Winnipeg Municipal election. They also took on the role of voting officers, learning valuable lessons about the voting process.

What a fun way to teach our students about governance and that voting is their right as a Canadian citizen.
